What is the PTSA and why should I join?

The PTSA is a voluntary organization which brings together parents, students, and school staff members for the purpose of enhancing and supporting many facets of the Oakton High School community. Your membership dues help the PTSA support our:

STUDENTS through financial support to student service clubs, academic teams, and performance groups such as DECA, AVID, Journalism, Chamber Orchestra, Symphonic Band, and Robotics. The PTSA provides snacks during SOL and AP Testing, finances AP   Readers, hosts Academic Award ceremonies, supports the Summer Freshman Orientation program, Jump Start, and facilitates a practice SAT test event administered by Kaplan. The PTSA hosts the annual All Night Grad Party which offers a SAFE, drug- and alcohol-free environment for all graduates to celebrate their accomplishment. The PTSA also partners with school counselors to provide mental health programming throughout the year.

TEACHERS through mini-grants, which enable them to attend academic conferences such as the American Shakespeare Center Teacher Seminar and join the American Council for Teaching Foreign Languages. The PTSA also provides a Welcome Back Brunch at the   beginning of the school year, dinner for all teachers at both Back to School Nights and lunch during Teacher Appreciation Week.

PARENTS by providing our Parent Education speaker events and publishing our Student Directory which is available in hard copy and as a smartphone and computer app. The PTSA also hosts regular meetings where school administrators are readily available to answer questions and discuss pertinent topics.

Why am I being asked to donate?

Membership dues alone are insufficient to cover all PTSA expenses. In addition to the items listed above, the PTSA pays for student planners for all incoming freshmen, contributes to meaningful school projects such as the Jeannine Musgrove Outdoor Classroom, helps fund a Day Prom for Special Education students, and more.

Can I volunteer?

The PTSA has a wide range of volunteer needs throughout the year including one-time commitments and regular volunteering. Please go to our website, oaktonhsptsa.org, to see a continually updated list of volunteer needs.
